Description

A cheesy and flavorful twist on classic sloppy joes, served on toasted garlic bread for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup diced green bell pepper (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup sloppy joe sauce (store-bought) or 3/4 cup ketchup + 2 tbsp brown sugar + 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional, for thicker filling)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • 3 hoagie rolls (split) or 6 thick slices Texas toast
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella (or provolone slices)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar (optional, for that golden top)

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with onion (and bell pepper if using) until browned. Drain excess grease.
  2. Season + sauce: Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds. Add sloppy joe sauce (and tomato paste if using). Season with salt, pepper, and chili powder. Simmer 5–8 minutes until thick.
  3. Toast the bread: Preheat oven to 400°F. Place split rolls (or toast) on a baking sheet. Mix melted butter with garlic powder and brush over bread. Bake 5 minutes to lightly toast.
  4. Assemble: Spoon sloppy joe mixture generously onto each piece of bread.
  5. Add cheese: Top with mozzarella (or provolone) and a sprinkle of cheddar.
  6. Bake until melty: Bake 6–10 minutes until cheese is fully melted and bubbly. Broil 1–2 minutes for extra golden tops (watch closely).
  7. Serve: Let cool 2 minutes, then serve hot and cheesy.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika to the beef mixture.
  • Use provolone slices for a smoother melt.
  • Adjust the chili powder to your preferred spice level.
