Description

A classic dessert made with day-old bread, milk, eggs, and warm spices, baked to perfection and served with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups day-old French bread, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Add the bread cubes to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the raisins evenly over the top.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes and gently press the bread down so it soaks up the liquid.
  5. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard.
  6. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Let the bread pudding cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  8. Scoop into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream while still warm.

Notes

  • Use stale bread for best results, as it absorbs the custard better.
  • Let the bread soak for at least 15 minutes to ensure a creamy texture.
  • Serve warm with ice cream for the best experience.
